A huge relief effort is underway, but rescue workers have struggled to reach some towns and villages cut off since the storm. President Benigno S. Aquino III has declared a state of national calamity.

Haiyan, the 25th tropical storm to enter Philippine territory this year, has now made landfall in North Vietnam, near the Chinese border, but has weakened to a tropical storm.

Tens of thousands of people living in the coastal plains were evacuated.

About Sanofi in the Philippines and the Group’s first emergency support

The local affiliate has already provided local employees with emergency funds and is also working to provide temporary accommodation/housing, transportation and other forms of emergency relief during this terrible time.

It also launched an internal campaign targeting its employees for donations and food products to help the victims.

The local teams are currently evaluating which medicines and vaccines to donate, such as antibiotics, diabetes treatments, statins, tetanus and flu vaccines etc… We have already donated an initial batch of medicines and vaccines to the Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Association of the Philippines (PHAP) Cares Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of the local industry association. We have also donated six batches of medicines through Tulipe (the French organization that federates donations made by Sanofi and other health companies) to “First-aid workers Without Borders”.

The affiliate and the Sanofi Espoir Foundation teams will coordinate these donations with the local Department of Health and the medical organizations so that they can receive and distribute them as quickly as possible.

The Sanofi Espoir Foundation and its partners already present in the Philippines have evaluated the needs and action plans that will be implemented in tandem with the authorities.

Initially, the Foundation allocated a budget of €100,000 for Médecins du Monde to enable the first emergency response health actions in Leyte island. According to the association, there is also a huge need for rehabilitating health centers, providing equipment and medication, especially on Leyte Island, which has been very hard hit.

A call for generosity has been launched in all Sanofi affiliates to enable employees who wish to an opportunity to participate in the Group's efforts in bringing their individual contributions to the Philippine Red Cross. In total, 97 500 € were collected and will be matched to the tune of € 1 million from the Group.

The Sanofi Espoir Foundation and the affiliate teams are working with the Philippines Red Cross and Médecins du Monde to use the Sanofi commitment in the best possible way to answer the post-emergency healthcare needs of the population in tandem with local authorities.
