The Sanofi Espoir Foundation and its Santé Sud partner today terminated the "Strengthening the profession and skills of midwives in Mongolia" program that has been carried out over the past two years in partnership with the Ministry of Health.

This closing event brought together about 100 stakeholders involved in the project, including national and regional public authorities, education partners and scientific societies (the Association of Mongolian Midwives and the Association of Mongolian Gynecologists-Obstetricians).

The impact of this program on the reference framework for this profession have been presented and shared:

  • Strengthening the legal framework for the midwifery profession by validating and initiating a new skills reference base developed by a multi-player working group convened as part of the project,
  • Strengthening the initial training of midwives by upgrading the training curriculum,
  • Strengthening continuing education for practicing midwives by developing a learning module on care coordination. Digital training materials were also created, enabling all midwives in Mongolia, especially in the regions, to train remotely in eight international skills.

The program also provided support for the Association of Mongolian Midwives to use a participatory approach to establish a structured, efficient and functional project useful for all midwives in Mongolia and perinatal care providers.

All local players are now able to ensure that these results are sustainable and improve maternal and newborn health in Mongolia.
