“Humanitarian Visa d’Or” 2012 Awarded to the Photographer Mani for his Reports from Syria

Perpignan, France, September 6, 2012


For the second year in a row, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), with the support of the Sanofi Espoir Foundation, organized the “ICRC Humanitarian Visa d’Or” photojournalist competition.

 
This competition is open to professional photojournalists who signed up for the 24th edition of the Visa pour l'Image International Festival of Photojournalism in Perpignan.

It is also part of the global ICRC project on “Health care in danger - A matter of life and death”, that began in 2011 and ends in 2015.

 

The purpose of the Humanitarian Visa d’Or is to illustrate the issue of respect for medical missions in armed conflicts and other violent situations.

On September 6, 2012, The ICRC Visa d’Or humanitarian prize of €8,000, was awarded to Mani for his photo reportage “Inside Syria” for the daily French newspaper Le Monde.

His photos show the vulnerability of first-aid operations in the devastated city of Homs, underscoring the universal obligation for fighting forces to respect the wounded and rescue personnel under all circumstances, in accordance with the basic principles of international humanitarian law.
